Working in tandem, these resources offer a valuable introduction to science education and will help develop vocabulary, inspire curiosity and more!

Part 1 – The Coloring Book:

Download and print out the “Eight Planets” coloring book. The book features the song’s simple lyrics and fun black-and-white illustrations. Use the video as a helpful reference along the way!

Part 2 – The Craft:

All the materials you need are below. Most everything can be found around the house or at your local store. Get creative, improvise and let us know what works for you!

• Cardboard box
• Paint and paint brush
• Tennis ball
• Star-themed stickers
• Glue

• Lay your cardboard box flat and start painting! We mixed together some dark and light blues to capture the space background.

• Don’t forget to paint your tennis ball too – ours is green and blue to represent Earth! We cut off about a quarter of the ball to make the gluing easier – a parent should assist there. Alternatively, feel free to keep it even simpler by painting or drawing Earth and the other planets.
• For your finishing touches, start applying the star-themed stickers.

• You’re all done – fold and staple together your finished coloring book, and find a spot around the house to show off your great work!

In celebration of World Oceans Day on June 8th, we put together this fun and colorful rainbow fish craft. Try it with your family or in the classroom – all you’ll need are some simple household materials.

Use this activity as an opportunity to get creative with colors, talk about the importance of our oceans and learn about some of the different ocean life!

Materials:

All the materials you need are below. Most everything can be found around the house or at your local store. Get creative, improvise and let us know what works for you!

• Paint (rainbow colors!)
• Cotton balls
• Clothespins
• Paper plate
• Black sharpie

Step 1 – Draw:

Draw your fish! We went with the classic goldfish.

Step 2 – Paint:

Set up sections of your rainbow paint onto your paper plate. Then, for each color, attach a cotton ball to a clothespin and dip.

Press and lift your clothespins to create side-by-side circles to mimic the fish’s (rainbow!) scales.

1. Improve Motor Skills

Holding crayons, manipulating them in and around the lines and frequently alternating colors all develop a child’s fine motor skills. These fine motor skills will eventually play a critical role in more advanced handwriting development. So continue to encourage purposeful coloring!

2. Improve Hand-Eye Coordination

Practicing staying inside the lines and recognizing color patterns are a terrific boost for a young learner’s hand-eye coordination. Developing this skill early on will also prove beneficial for handwriting development!

3. Stimulate Creativity

There’s no right or wrong answer on a coloring page. Feel free to provide guidance and encouragement along the way, but coloring is a great opportunity for kids to freely express their creative side.

Inspired by our nursery rhyme videos, all of our coloring pages also include lyrics – so practice your rhyming and reading at the same time!

4. Relieve Stress

Coloring can be quite soothing, even for adults! A successfully colored page requires a certain amount of physical and mindful calm. It encourages kids to focus their energy on one task with a clear end. And that end result can bring a great sense of satisfaction!

5. Patience, Young Grasshopper

Coloring can be soothing and stress relieving, but more detailed pages can also be challenging and tedious. To end up with your desired masterpiece, you’ll have to be meticulous and patient along the way!

Watch Mary and Jack sing “Hey Diddle Diddle” in a brand new video, and then try crafting your own scene based on the song. Activities like this one are terrific for exercising creativity, comprehension and problem-solving. Watch and sing along to the video, and then discuss the characters and scene you’re recreating in the craft.

Materials:

All the materials you need are below. Most everything can be found around the house or at your local store. Get creative, improvise and let us know what works for you!

• Hey Diddle Diddle Coloring Page
• Cow drawing or printout
• Crayons or colored pencils
• Yellow foam board or construction paper
• 2 paper fasteners
• Ribbon
• Scissors

Step 1 – Color:

Print out our free Hey Diddle Diddle Coloring Page. Draw (or print out) your own leaping cow. Color away!

Step 2 – The Moon:

Trace a circle on your yellow foam board, and then cut it out. This will be your moon!

Step 3 – The Jump:

Using your ribbon and paper fasteners, attach your cow and moon cutouts.

Step 4 – Put It All Together!

Place your cow and moon into the coloring page scene. Rotate the cow around the moon to recreate the jump while singing the song lyrics!
