Thanksgiving is just around the corner! Below we’ve outlined a fun and creative way to show your kids how to give thanks and gratitude this holiday season. We’ve named this craft, “Gratitude Pie”. We hope that making this pie will be a memorable and heartfelt activity everyone can enjoy.  At the end of this craft have the kids share what they are grateful for and why. While sharing, each child will have a chance to focus on communicating their ideas and thoughts. We hope you can carve out some time in your day to share some gratitude with your little ones!

Supplies:

  • Paper plates
  • Paint Brushes
  • Construction paper (your choice of color)
  • Bowl (for tracing)
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Washable markers
  • Push pins
  • Brads

At the end of this craft your paper plate pie will reveal each thing you are thankful for! Let’s get stated.

Pie Making:

  1. Create your pie crust by painting a tan circle around the edge of your paper plate.
  2. Take a sheet of construction paper, and use your bowl to trace a perfect circle. The circle represents the center of the pie (we used orange for a pumpkin pie).
  3. Apply glue at the center of the plate and place down your circle “filling”.
  4. Attach the “pie” plate to another plate. To do this, use a push pin to create a hole at the center of the plates.
  5. Take your push pin out and push your brad through the hole. Now, your plate should be able to rotate.
  6. Use your scissors to cut a piece of your pie. Only cut the top plate!
  7. Across the top of the pie write, “I am thankful for…”
  8. In the blank space where you previously cut a pie slice write what you are thankful for. Rotate the plate to list more things that you are thankful for.

Tips:

  • The color of your construction paper determines the type of pie. In our Show Me How Episode we went with orange for pumpkin pie!
  • Having your younger kids hold the marker and trace helps build fine motor skills.
  • If your kids are too young to handle scissors you can help them cut.

This craft focuses on social and emotional learning. Ask the children what it means to have gratitude. While making the craft the kids can also practice reading and spelling as they list each thing they are grateful for.  We hope this holiday craft inspires joyful learning! It’s not required, but we strongly recommend real pie to be eaten during this activity.

Step 1 – Flower Pot

Paper Flower Craft Step 1

Create your flower pots by taking the empty toilet paper rolls and wrapping them with construction paper. Then, using the images above for inspiration, decorate them however you wish. You can also use empty paper towel rolls by cutting them in half with scissors. While you should encourage the kids to get hands on with the decorating, make sure to handle the scissors yourself.

Step 2 – Fancy Flowers

Take the rest of the construction paper and cut out the different shapes for the petals and leaves. Then, glue them onto the straws to create roses, sunflowers, or invent your own flowers! Crinkle paper, ribbons, chenille stems, pom pons, beads, feathers, and yarn also make for fun textures and shapes. Get creative, add a personal touch, and see what you can come up with!

Crafty Fourth of July T-Shirts https://mothergooseclub.com/blog/crafty-fourth-of-july-t-shirts/ Tue, 02 Jul 2019 18:20:32 +0000 http://www.mothergooseclub.com/?p=10888 4th of July Craft

With July 4th just around the corner, we put together a fun and simple craft that’s not only wearable, but so fashionable that you and the kids will steal the show at the cookout!

Outside of the cool tees you’ll have when finished (for you or your plush dolls!), this craft is also a great opportunity for the little ones to practice their fine motor skills and learn about the American flag! If they aren’t confident in using scissors just yet, handle that one yourself, but encourage them to get crafty and creative with the rest of the steps!

Materials:

All the materials you need are below. Most everything can be found around the house or at your local store. Get creative, improvise and let us know what works for you!

4th of July Craft step 1
  • Blank white t-shirt
  • Roll of red ribbon
  • Roll of blue ribbon with star pattern
  • Fabric glue
  • Scissors

Step 1 – Stars and Stripes:

4th of July Craft materials

For your stripes, cut 3-4 strips of red ribbon depending of the size of the shirt you are making. The strips should vary in length, with one long strip making up the bottom of the flag, and then some shorter strips to accommodate for the stars.

Now it’s time to make the stars. Unravel a good length of the blue ribbon and tie it into a bow shape before cutting. Just like the stripes, choose the number of stars based on the size of the shirt, and how big you’re making your ribbon bows. 2-4 should do the trick!

Step 2 – Put It All Together:

4th of July Craft step 2

Glue your stars and stripes onto the shirt to make the flag! We recommend putting the bows on a slant to give the design some extra character. Let the glue dry before wearing to ensure all the ribbon stays put!

We created our own bean bags using some old fabric cut into squares, beans and sewing thread. If you’d prefer to keep it simpler, improvise with some household objects or purchase a few pre-made bean bags.
