Is your child a fan of Jack B. Nimble? Bring Jack to life with this simple and affordable costume craft! Costumes can elevate your child’s pretend-play and involving them in the crafting process has tons of benefits. Projects like this help develop problem-solving and fine motor skills, creativity, imagination and artistic expression in children of all ages.

While making costumes, you can talk to your child about following directions (including what steps come first, next and last), help them count materials and talk about shapes. If your child is an early reader, you can also practice reading and comprehension skills by having them help read the instructions below.

Crafting time is bonding time – encourage discussion, questions and artistic liberties along the way. Remember – your finished product will only last so long, but the memories you create crafting will last a lifetime. Making a DIY Mother Goose Club costume is a great activity for super-fan birthdays, Halloween or dress-up!

Materials:

All the materials you need are below. Most everything can be found around the house or at your local store. Get creative, improvise and let us know what works for you!

• Red and yellow t-shirt
• Blue pants
• Yellow socks
• Felt: blue, gray, orange
• Red and blue construction paper
• Orange duct tape
• Scissors
• Stapler
• Glue
• Marker
• Pencil

Step 1: Jack’s Cape

First, let’s make Jack’s signature red cape! Using your marker and the above image as a guide, draw lines to create the cape’s shape. Cut through the front and back of the shirt along lines 1 and 2. Then, cut through only the front side of the shirt for lines 3, 4 and 5.

Step 2: Jack’s Socks

Wrap the orange duct tape around the socks, making sure to leave a small gap at the back. This gap ensures that the socks will still fit and not become uncomfortable as the day goes on.

Step 3: Jack’s Shorts

Cut the bottoms off of the blue sweatpants, and fold a cuff to make Jack’s shorts. Aim to have the bottom of the cuffs reach just below the knee. Next, cut two pockets from the dark blue felt and glue them onto the pants.

Step 4: Jack’s Shirt

To make Jack’s shirt, simply cut an orange felt shirt pocket, blue belt, and grey belt buckle. Glue these to the shirt, as shown above.

Steps 5-8: Jack’s Hair & Mask

Cut a strip of orange tape to fit around the head. Then, cut your blue construction paper into strips, and attached them to the tape by pressing them next to each other onto the sticky side.

Once the strips have been laid and attached on the tape, tape the end of the orange tape string together. Make sure the orange, non-sticky side is facing inward towards itself.

Bring the ends of the blue strips together to where they are overlapping. Staple them together in the center.

Cut a couple blue hair tips from the construction paper and glue them on top, as shown above. Finally, cut out Jack’s red mask from the red paper and glue it on top of the head as well.
