Tips & 10 Cute Pictures for National Puppy Day https://mothergooseclub.com/blog/tips-cute-pictures-in-celebration-of-national-puppy-day/ Fri, 22 Mar 2019 14:42:21 +0000 http://www.mothergooseclub.com/?p=8744 Recent reports suggest that over 65% of US households own a pet, and for good reason. For kids especially, growing up with a dog or a cat can be a defining part of their childhood. Pets help children develop emotional, cognitive and social skills, and having a pet can promote physical activity and play. And of course, pets provide comfort during those trying and stressful times.

So in honor of National Puppy Day, head down below for 10 pictures (courtesy of Flickr) of the cutest and cuddliest puppies. And if your family is thinking about adopting a pet, we encourage you to check out your local animal shelter. The Shelter Pet Project is a great resource to help match your family with the perfect furry companion at a nearby shelter and answer all of your questions about pet adoption.

If you also want to celebrate National Puppy Day with rhymes, sing along with Bo Peep in “Ten Little Puppy Dogs“, great for practicing simple counting and vocabulary, or browse our library of videos starring Bingo!

Enjoy!

1. Who’s a good boy?

Dogs understand about the same number of words and gestures as a 2-year-old. No wonder they make such great companions for young kids!

2. So sweet

Labrador Retrievers have been on the American Kennel Club’s 10 most popular breeds list longer than any other breed – for 25 years!

3. Check out this teeny tiny

Dalmations are actually born white and develop spots as they get older — guess this cutie is a different breed.

4. A little ray of sunshine

While many people think that dogs are fully colorblind, they can see blue and yellow.

5. Sleepy puppy!

Your dog can catch your yawn! Believe it or not, your yawning can trigger the same in a dog. This is even more prevalent if the dog knows you.

6. Exploring the outside world

The US has the highest pet dog population in the entire world. According to the National Pet Owners Survey, there are more than 89.7 million pet dogs in over 60 million households. Whoa!

7. Such drama

A dog’s sense of smell is about 100 thousand times stronger than a human’s, meaning they can pick up on subtle changes in their human’s emotions. For example, they know if you start to perspire due to a change in mood. Dogs can even be trained to sniff out cancer!

8. Everyone loves a Frenchie!

Dogs have about 1,700 taste buds, compared to humans that have anywhere between 2 and 10 thousand.

9. Off to the races

Like a human’s finger print, a dog’s nose print is unique.

6 Ways to Celebrate World Wildlife Day https://mothergooseclub.com/blog/6-ways-to-celebrate-world-wildlife-day/ Sun, 03 Mar 2019 15:00:05 +0000 http://www.mothergooseclub.com/?p=8655 Celebrate World Wildlife Day

This year’s UN World Wildlife Day celebrates “life below water”, making March 3rd a great opportunity to introduce your child to the spectacular world under the sea. Even if you don’t live near the coast, there are plenty of actions you and your family can take to help keep our oceans clean.

1. Reduce Disposable Plastic Intake

Single-use plastic items, such as dipsosable bags and straws, contribute to the massive amount of garbage entering the ocean every year. This garbage poses an extreme risk to marine animals. Cut back on your plastic use by bringing a reusable bag to the store, drinking your beverage without a single-use straw, or bringing your own travel mug to your coffee shop.

2. Cut Back Energy Use

The ocean absorbs much of the excess heat created by burning fossil fuels, which contributes to rising ocean temperatures and changing marine ecosystems. While we know it’s not feasible for everyone to eliminate car travel, there’s plenty of other steps you can take to reduce your carbon footprint. Use energy efficient light bulbs and turn off electronics when you’re not in a room. When possible, use public transportation or ride your bike. And avoid setting your thermostat at extreme temperatures.

3. Make Sustainable Seafood Choices

Eating seafood may be tasty, but it can contribute to serious overfishing of wild populations. There are plenty of web resources that can help you make sustainable seafood decisions – we love this site from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch. There’s even a free app for environmentally-conscious decisions on-the-go.

4. Avoid Harmful Cleaning Products

All drains lead to the ocean, so be mindful of the cleaning products and chemicals you flush away. The US Environmental Protection Agency’s Safe Choice website can help you search for household products that support a healthier environment.

5. Clean Up

If you have the opportunity to visit the beach, pick up litter that you see along way. Not only are you helping marine habitats recover from human impact, but you’re also teaching your child a valuable lesson about eco-responsibility.

6. Educate

Since many of us don’t have easy access to visit these amazing creatures and habitats, we’ve compiled a YouTube playlist that will help bring alive the wonders of the deep blue sea. Click here for a selection of kid-friendly videos from Mother Goose Club and some of our favorite, trusted digital creators, including Sesame Street, The Wiggles and Super Simple Songs.
